We assessed effects of compressive forces to mouse tail segments of WT and TNF-Tg mice with SA, via contrast enhanced-MRI and histology. Normalized marrow contrast enhancement (NMCE) of uninstrumented WT vertebrae significantly decrease, threefold (p 0.01) from 8 to 12 weeks of age, while the NMCE of TNF-Tg vertebrae remained elevated. Compressive loading (6× body weight) increased NMCE twofold (p 0.02) within 2 weeks in WT tails, which was equal to 6× loaded TNF-Tg tails within 4 weeks. Histology conf… br

An atypical localisation of tuberculosis infection in patients undergoing haemodialysis: a case report

An atypical localisation of tuberculosis infection in patients undergoing haemodialysis: a case report
Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare skeletal system localisation of TB in haemodialysis patients. In this paper, a case of Pott’s disease with a psoas muscle abscess is reported. The patient had been on the dialysis programme for five years and was complaining of back pain, weight loss and weakness, which were investigated. A thoracolumbar magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple paravertebral abscesses invading the psoas muscle. TB diagnosis was made by microbiological analysis of specimen, which was obtained by fine needle aspiration under computerised tomography guidance. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Overweight children may develop back pain
Being overweight as a child could lead to early degeneration in the spine, as per a research studypresented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). “This is the first study to show an association between increased body mass index (BMI) and disc abnormalities in children,” said the study’s main author, Judah G. Chronic lumbar paraspinal compartment syndrome: A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE.
Authors: Xu YM, Bai YH, Li QT, Yu H, Cao ML A 25-year-old male weightlifter felt increasing intractable low back pain during training but denied any acute injury. The physical examination, blood parameters, radiographs and MRI were unremarkable. He had been treated non-operatively by various means, with only temporary relief. The pressures in the lumbar paraspinal compartment were abnormally high and he was treated by surgical decompression. This gave rapid relief, he returned to training, and one year later the pain had not recurred. PMID: 19949129 [PubMed - in process] (Source: The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume)

Behçet’s disease associated with celiac disease: a very rare association
Abstract  There are common findings between Behçet’s disease (BD) and celiac disease (CD); however, association in the same patient is a rarity. We relate the third case in the literature of this overlap in a 40-year-old woman with history of obstipation since her childhood. She also presented asymmetric polyarthralgia, loss of weight, anemia, oral recurrent aphthas (>3/year) and genital ulcerations, inflammatory lower back pain, bowel bleeding and abdominal colic. Afterwards, she presented episodes of erythema nodosum, superficial thrombophlebitis, pseudofolliculitis and aseptic meningitis, thus fulfilling criteria for BD. Due to persistence of the digestive complaints, a gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed. The biopsy showed chronic duodenitis with intraepithel…
