Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Beneficial And Low Cost Treatment For Back Pain
An article published in this week’s issue of The Lancet reports that group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can reduce low-back pain at a low cost to the health-care provider. The rarity of the syndrome has prevented the establishment of specific guidelines for management; therefore, we will discuss this case in the context of similar previously reported cases, contrasting the various treatment approaches and outcomes described in previous reports. This discussion outlines a syndrome not commonly considered in the differential diagnosis of back pain. The effectiveness of the McKenzie method in addition to first-line care for acute low back pain: a randomized controlled trial
Conclusions: When added to the currently recommended first-line care of acute low back pain, a treatment programme based on the McKenzie method does not produce appreciable additional short-term improvements in pain, disability, function or global perceived effect. However, the McKenzie method seems to reduce health utilization although it does not reduce patient’s risk of developing persistent symptoms.Trial Registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry: ACTRN12605000032651 (Source: BMC Medicine)
