Cost effectiveness of two rehabilitation programmes for neck and back pain patients: A seven year follow-up. Jensen IB, Busch H, Bodin L, Hagberg J, Nygren A, Bergström G. Pain 2009;142(3): 202–8
The cost effectiveness of work-oriented rehabilitation for persons on long-term sick leave needs to be assessed. This prospective observational study presents a follow-up seven years after rehabilitation using two different evidence-based work-oriented regimens. Individuals on sick leave for neck and back pain were referred to two rehabilitation programmes in Sweden. The first programme was a relatively low-intensity programme based on orthopaedic manual therapy and exercise programme (OMTP). The second programme was a full-time multidisciplinary programme (MDP). The primary outcome was sickness absence seven years after intervention. Cost effectiveness was calculated on the basis of loss of production due to sickness absence. The results show that participants referred to MDP and with les…

Evidences of memory dysfunction and maladaptive coping in chronic low back pain and rheumatoid arthritis patients: challenges for rehabilitation.

Evidences of memory dysfunction and maladaptive coping in chronic low back pain and rheumatoid arthritis patients: challenges for rehabilitation.
CONCLUSIONS: Both groups of chronic pain patients are likely to have impaired memory. Maladaptive coping correlates to LBP, but not to RA. A further controlled protocol must include greater sample of patients. By analyzing memory deficits of chronic pain patients, clinicians could establish targeted rehabilitation programs and outcomes. Some techniques are discussed. PMID: 19935619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Low back pain associates with altered activity of the cerebral cortex prior to arm movements that require postural adjustment.

Low back pain associates with altered activity of the cerebral cortex prior to arm movements that require postural adjustment.
CONCLUSIONS: Cerebrocortical activity becomes altered prior to arm movements requiring APAs for individuals with chronic LBP. SIGNIFICANCE: These results support a theoretical model that altered central motor neurophysiology associates with LBP, thereby implying that rehabilitation strategies should address these neuromotor impairments. Usefulness of perceived level of exertion in patients with chronic low back pain attending a physical training programme.
Conclusions. The capability of the Borg-scale to accurately predict HR appears moderate. However combined with measuring HR, it results in a relevant and efficient method for training CLBP patients in clinical practice. PMID: 20001827 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Meeting the ranging of informational needs of chronic low back pain sufferers: Conceptual design and rationale of the interactive website ONESELF.

Meeting the ranging of informational needs of chronic low back pain sufferers: Conceptual design and rationale of the interactive website ONESELF.
Conclusion. Online interactional tools such as ONESELF are a promising source of health communication, provided that the content manager of the website and the health professionals collaborate in a rigorously structured manner. ONESELF can benefit traditional medical consultations in helping screen requests from patients that do not need to see a doctor, and in acting as a repository of background information that saves consultation time for more urgent matters. The effectiveness of a functional training programme for patients with chronic low back pain–a pilot study.
CONCLUSION: An individualised functional training programme benefits chronic LBP patients. PMID: 19802926 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

The effect of different physical activity levels on muscle fiber size and type distribution of lumbar multifidus. A biopsy study on low back pain patient groups and healthy control subjects.

The effect of different physical activity levels on muscle fiber size and type distribution of lumbar multifidus. A biopsy study on low back pain patient groups and healthy control subjects.
CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the level of physical activity did not affect muscle fiber size and type distribution among LBP patients groups. These findings suggest that not only inactivity but also high physical activity levels can have an adverse effect on the multifidus muscle fiber characteristics. Kinematic analysis of dynamic lumbar motion in patients with lumbar segmental instability using digital videofluoroscopy
This study determined some kinematic differences between two groups during the full range of lumbar spine. Devices, such as digital videofluoroscopy can assist in identifying better criteria for diagnosis of LSI in otherwise nonspecific low back pain patients in hope of providing more specific treatment. Acute low back pain: clinical course and prognostic factors.
CONCLUSIONS: Acute LBP patients with disability generally recover in the first weeks. General health perception (NHP) - pain subgroup score was identified in particular as the best prognostic factor for non-recovery in the short term. Hence, pain should be given particular consideration in baseline assessments of acute LBP patients. PMID: 19736660 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)
