A systematic review on the effectiveness of physical and rehabilitation interventions for chronic non-specific low back pain
The objective of the present study is to determine the effectiveness of physical and rehabilitation interventions (i.e. exercise therapy, back school, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), low level laser therapy, education, massage, behavioural treatment, traction, multidisciplinary treatment, lumbar supports, and heat/cold therapy) for chronic LBP. The primary search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and PEDro up to 22 December 2008. Existing Cochrane reviews for the individual interventions were screened for studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The search strategy outlined by the Cochrane Back Review Groups (CBRG) was followed. The following were included for selection criteria: (1) randomized controlled trials, (2) adult (â¥18 years) pop…

The patient-specific functional scale is more responsive than the Roland Morris disability questionnaire when activity limitation is low
Abstract The primary objective of this study was to determine which questionnaire, the Roland Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ) or the patient-specific functional scale (PSFS), was better at detecting change in activity limitation in a large cohort of patients with low back pain undergoing rehabilitation. A secondary aim was to determine if the responsiveness of the questionnaires was influenced by the patientâs level of activity limitation at baseline. Responsiveness statistics, including effect size statistics, Pearsonâs r correlations and receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were used to determine ability to detect change in activity limitation on 831 patients with low back pain. Data were analysed at two time points; directly after treatment (…

Exercise Offers Benefits After Low Back Rehabilitation
Patients with chronic low back pain who participate in a post-rehabilitation exercise program enjoy benefits in trunk muscle endurance and level of disability compared to patients who receive usual care, according to a study in the May 20 issue of Spine. (Source: Modern Medicine)

Reasons for drop-out in rehabilitation treatment of native patients and non-native patients with chronic low back pain in the Netherlands: a medical file study.
CONCLUSION: The present study provided evidence that drop-out in non-native patients is often related to different expectations regarding the content of rehabilitation treatment. PMID: 20414186 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

Perceived functional ability assessed with the spinal function sort: is it valid for European rehabilitation settings in patients with non-specific non-acute low back pain?
Abstract The aim of this study involving 170 patients suffering from non-specific low back pain was to test the validity of the spinal function sort (SFS) in a European rehabilitation setting. The SFS, a picture-based questionnaire, assesses perceived functional ability of work tasks involving the spine. All measurements were taken by a blinded research assistant; work status was assessed with questionnaires. Our study demonstrated a high internal consistency shown by a Cronbachâs alpha of 0.98, reasonable evidence for unidimensionality, spearman correlations of >0.6 with work activities, and discriminating power for work status at 3 and 12 months by ROC curve analysis (area under curve = 0.760 (95% CI 0.689â0.822), respectively, 0.801 (95% CI 0.731â…

What Concerns Workers with Low Back Pain? Findings of a Qualitative Study of Patients Referred for Rehabilitation
Conclusions In this study, workers with low back pain remained uncertain of how best to manage their condition in the workplace despite previous healthcare interventions and they were also concerned about the impact back pain might have on their job security and future work capacity. They were concerned about how back pain was viewed by their employers and co-workers and felt the need to justify their condition with a medical diagnosis and evidence. Clinicians and employers may need to address these issues in order to enable people to continue to work more confidently with back pain. [A comparison of multimodal programmes of patient education in the rehabilitation of chronic low back pain]
Authors: Morfeld M, Küch D, Greitemann B, Dibbelt S, Salewski C, Franke GH, Liebenau A There is growing evidence for the effectiveness of multimodal intervention concepts for chronic low back pain in the international literature, and accordingly several German rehabilitation programmes for the treatment of chronic low back pain patients have been developed. Focus of this paper is to describe and compare frequently used German multimodal intervention programmes for in- and outpatient rehabilitation of patients with chronic low back pain. Programmes were chosen by searching the most relevant online resources as well as the online pages of Deutsche Rentenversicherung and Zentrum Patientenschulung during September 2008. Keywords guiding the search were: Patientenschulung, Rückenschme…

Perspectives on prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation of low back pain in WORK.
CONCLUSIONS: WORK has contributed a broad realm of publications to the knowledge base on LBP and employment. Two thirds of the articles were contributed from authors within North America, with a greater emphasis on prevention. This article highlights the similarities and differences in the international knowledge base in the management of LBP in WORK. Future directions for research are elaborated drawing on current perspectives of two experts on the management of LBP. PMID: 20364051 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Work)

Cost effectiveness of two rehabilitation programmes for neck and back pain patients: A seven year follow-up. Jensen IB, Busch H, Bodin L, Hagberg J, Nygren A, Bergström G. Pain 2009;142(3): 202–8
The cost effectiveness of work-oriented rehabilitation for persons on long-term sick leave needs to be assessed. This prospective observational study presents a follow-up seven years after rehabilitation using two different evidence-based work-oriented regimens. Individuals on sick leave for neck and back pain were referred to two rehabilitation programmes in Sweden. The first programme was a relatively low-intensity programme based on orthopaedic manual therapy and exercise programme (OMTP). The second programme was a full-time multidisciplinary programme (MDP). The primary outcome was sickness absence seven years after intervention. Cost effectiveness was calculated on the basis of loss of production due to sickness absence. The results show that participants referred to MDP and with les…
