Self-reported assessment of disability and performance-based assessment of disability are influenced by different patient characteristics in acute low back pain
Abstract For an individual, the functional consequences of an episode of low back pain is a key measure of their clinical status. Self-reported disability measures are commonly used to capture this component of the back pain experience. In non-acute low back pain there is some uncertainty of the validity of this approach. It appears that self-reported assessment of disability and direct measurements of functional status are only moderately related. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated this relationship in a sample of 94 acute low back pain patients. Both self-reported disability and a performance-based assessment of disability were assessed, along with extensive profiling of patient characteristics. Scale consistency of the performance-based assessment was investi…

Severe neck and back pain in adolescence: remember osteoblastoma
Abstract Osteoblastoma is a rare benign tumor of the bone. A 15-year-old boy presented with severe neck and back pain and was followed up for myofascial pain syndrome for 12 months. There was no neurologic deficit or scoliosis. The X-ray of the patient was normal. MRI revealed local destructive tumorous lesion of the T3–T5 vertebrae. The tumor was resected by a spinal surgeon and histologic examination revealed osteoblastoma. The patient’s complaints have been completely resolved and there was no recurrence during the follow-up. Back Pain - Causes of Lower Back Pain - Weak Muscles
With most adults experiencing lower back pain sometime during their life, it’s important to understand what cause back problems, what treatment is available and how these conditions can be avoided. Comes the weekend and we’re out on the golf links, playing tennis or any number of weekend activities. Monday morning rolls around and we can barely get out of bed! What happened?

Technique of insertion of total lumbar disc prostheses: preoperative assessment, insertion technique and significance of navigation
Abstract Total disc arthroplasty for lumbar spine is a new solution for low back pain treatment after adequate patient selection. The surgical technique starts with a morphological and anatomical analysis to eliminate surgical exposure problems. The surgical approach is retroperitoneal from the left or the right side after horizontal skin incision. Video-assistance improves vision and allows minimal invasive exposure. At level L5-S1, the exposure is performed in the vessels bifurcation (aorta and vena cava), at level L4–L5 the ligature of the lumbar ascending vein is the key point to allow appropriate retraction of the vessels. In some difficult cases the use of dedicated implants allows prosthesis insertion without extensive exposure by the use of an oblique implant. Th…
