Incidence of self-limiting back pain in children following caudal blockade: an exploratory study.
Conclusions: The results of this study provide support that transient self-limiting back pain after caudal blockade does occur in pediatric patients. Clinically, this is useful information for physicians to provide to their patients. An exploration of factors that may be associated with back pain following caudal blockade in children is an interesting area of future research. Leiomyosarcoma of the renal vein
Abstract A 43-year-old woman was referred to our clinic for evaluation of a left retroperitoneal mass. She presented to our internal medicine department complaining of back pain. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a left retroperitoneal mass 55 mm in size in the hilum of the left kidney. Enhanced CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disclosed a poorly staining mass. Metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy demonstrated no accumulation in the mass; moreover, endocrinologic examination was normal. Laparoscopic resection of the left retroperitoneal tumor was attempted; however, strong adhesion between the tumor and the left renal vein was encountered. Thus, left nephrectomy after open conversion was performed. Histological findings indicated leiomyosarcoma origin…

A systematic review on the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions for chronic non-specific low-back pain
The objective of this review was to determine the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions [i.e., non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and opioids] for non-specific chronic low-back pain (LBP). Existing Cochrane reviews for the four interventions were screened for studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Then, the literature searches were updated. Only randomized controlled trials on adults (â¥18 years) with chronic (â¥12 weeks) non-specific LBP and evaluation of at least one of the main clinically relevant outcome measures (pain, functional status, perceived recovery, or return to work) were included. The GRADE approach was used to determine the quality of evidence. A total of 17 randomized controlled trials was include…

Primary iliopsoas abscess and pregnancy.
CONCLUSION:: Primary iliopsoas abscess should be considered in the differential diagnosis of low-back pain among high-risk pregnant women. Clinicians should be vigilant in identifying high-risk factors and aggressive in treating this rare and potentially fatal complication. Safety and efficacy of a new percutaneously implantable interspinous process device
Conclusions The In-space is a percutaneous treatment option of claudication in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. Compared with microsurgical decompression surgery, recurrence rate within 1 year is, however, high and the device seems not suitable for the treatment of low back pain. Therefore, the authors suggest that the device should presently be used primarily in controlled clinical trials in order to get more information concerning the optimal indication. Low back pain and work-related factors among nurses in intensive care units
Conclusions. A high prevalence of back pain was found in intensive care unit nurses, even though they comprise a very young workforce in Korea.Relevance to clinical practice. Improving nurse staffing, reducing the frequency of night shifts and assessing risk factors in specific intensive care unit specialties are suggested to decrease back pain prevalence. Goal scaling for low back pain in primary care: development of a semi-structured interview incorporating minimal important change
Conclusions The formation of individualized goal scales was successful in all of the participants in this study. Patients were able to understand the concept of ‘minimal important change’, and identify a specific target to reflect this for two-thirds of their chosen goals. Pfizer suspends tanezumab osteoarthritis clinical trial programme
Source: Pfizer Area: News Pfizer Inc. has announced the suspension of the osteoarthritis clinical programme for its investigational compound tanezumab following a request by the FDA. The worldwide suspension follows a small number of reports of patients on tanezumab experiencing a worsening of osteoarthritis leading to joint replacement. To date, this adverse event has not been observed in non-osteoarthritis patient populations taking the drug. The FDA has asked the company to present its assessment of the potential implications of this adverse event for the other tanezumab clinical programmes involving non-osteoarthritis patients (cancer pain, interstitial cystitis, chronic low back pain and painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy).
