Sacral fractures: Report of two cases
Sacral fractures are relatively rare and can constitute a debilitating condition causing low back pain. The etiology is diverse: sacral insufficiency type fractures in elder osteoporotic people, fatigue fractures in young active individuals, metastasis and consequent irradiation therapy in gynaecological malignancies. We hereby describe 2 cases: (a) a 64-year-old woman suffering osteopenia who is under treatment with calcium tablets. She reported lower back pain and difficulty walking in the absence of trauma. Plain radiographs showed a linear fracture in the alae sacrum, while bone scinthigraphic 99mTc methylene disposphonate showed linear pattern uptake, suggesting osteolitic lesion.
