Mind-Body Medicine in Clinical Practice: Challenges and Opportunities
As the impressive collection of abstracts in this issue of EXPLORE demonstrates, the evidence base for the effectiveness of mind-body therapies (MBT) for a wide variety of clinical conditions continues to grow. Strong evidence abounds for the use of these approaches in cardiac rehabilitation, pain syndromes including headache and low back pain, incontinence, insomnia, postsurgical care, and symptom relief in cancer. So why is it that mind-body strategies are still so rarely offered as an integral component of most healthcare settings in the United States? With the level of potential benefit that MBT could offer many patients based on this evidence, why are these therapies not applied more widely in primary care settings and elsewhere?
