A qualitative investigation of Red Flags for serious spinal pathology
Red Flags are prognostic variables for serious pathology, i.e. benign or malignant tumour, infection, fracture or cauda equina syndrome. Only 1% of cases of low back pain are caused by serious spinal pathology . For some years, the major international guidelines on managing low back pain have been consistent in recommending screening for Red Flags . Historically, Red Flags have been developed using clinical observation and retrospective analysis. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, the prognostic strength of individual Red Flags or combinations of Red Flags is not known. In order to be considered prognostic, a variable does not necessarily need to be caused by a particular pathological process, but it must be strongly associated with the development of a specific outcome in order to pred…
