[original articles] antibiotic treatment in patients with low-back pain associated with modic changes type 1 (bone oedema): a pilot study
Conclusions: In this uncontrolled trial, the clinical effect of antibiotic treatment was large in a group of patients with Modic changes suffering from persistent LBP following a disc herniation. These results provide tentative support for a hypothesis that bacterial infection may play a role in LBP with Modic changes and indicate the need for randomised controlled trials to test this hypothesis. Back pain still an issue for over 5 million australians: are we treating it right?
A new study by researchers at The George Institute for International Health has found that back pain is a reoccurring problem for five million Australians. According to lead author, Professor Chris Maher, Director of Musculoskeletal Research at The George Institute, “After an episode of back pain resolves, one in four people will experience a recurrence within one year. This explains why around 25% of the Australian population suffers from back pain at any one time. (Source: Rehabilitation News From Medical News Today)

Dynamic lumbar stabilization with the wallis interspinous implant
Abstract The primary goal of the Wallis system is to relieve or prevent low back pain that accompanies intervertebral segment (IVS) instability by increasing stiffness of the mobile segment, and unloading the disc and facet joints. Furthermore, restoring a more physiological biomechanical environment to the degenerate lumbar segment with the Wallis implant may foster healing of the disc and slow the degenerative cascade of adjacent segments. The implant, consisting of an interspinous process spacer that limits extension and two flexion-limiting bands, is intended to improve the stability of the treated intervertebral lumbar segment while preserving its mobility and local lordosis. Because the operation leaves all the anatomical elements intact except for the interspinous l…

Permanent Back Pain Myth Revealed
Would it not be nice to be free from an ongoing, or recurring back pain. To be free of the constant groaning pain at the bottom of your back. To get in and out of seats without aches and pains. To lean forward without sharp pains, and pick up normal items without putting yourself in bed for days ? Of course it would. I am not talking here about back pain caused by Arthritis, old age, or other such unavoidable conditions, but from undiagnosed long term back trouble.

Lumbar spinal chondroma presenting with radiculopathy: case report.
Lumbar Spinal Chondroma Presenting with Radiculopathy: Case Report. Turk Neurosurg. 2008;18(4):397-399 Authors: Cetınkal A, Güven G, Topuz AK, Colak A, Demırcan MN, Haholu A Chondroma is a very unusual cartilagenous neoplasm of the spine. Here we are present a case of spinal chondroma with radiculopathy. A 54-year-old female patient consulted with progressive low back pain and left femoral numbness. Lumbar spinal Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies showed an extradural mass lesion in the left L2 body. Computerized tomography (CT) did not reveal any osteolytic lesion of the bone. The mass lesion was excised totally by left partial hemilaminectomy and the intradural compartment was also checked. The histopathology of the lesion was confirmed as chondroma. Pre…

The cellular pathobiology of the degenerate intervertebral disc and discogenic back pain
In 2007, three times as many peer reviewed publications covering the biology and biotherapeutics of intervertebral disc (IVD) disease appeared in the literature than in 1997. This is testimony to the upsurge in interest in the IVD, mainly driven by the openings that modern molecular pathology has generated to investigate mechanisms of human disease and the potential offered by novel therapeutic technologies to use data coming from these studies to positively influence chronic discogenic back pain and sciatica. Molecular pathology has shown IVD degeneration, a major cause of low back pain, to be a complex, active disorder in which disturbed cytokine biology, cellular dysfunction and altered load responses play key roles. This has translated into a search for target molecules and disease pro…
